Cognitive Assessment Sydney

Think of cognitive testing as creating a detailed map of how your mind works. Like a GPS system that shows multiple routes to a destination, assessment reveals your brain’s preferred ways for processing information. The Australian Psychological Society provides comprehensive information about different types of psychological assessment available.

What We Assess:

  • Cognitive abilities including processing speed, working memory, and reasoning skills
  • Academic achievement in reading comprehension, written expression, and mathematical reasoning
  • Attention and executive functioning to understand focus patterns and organisational skills
  • Social and emotional functioning to recognise interpersonal strengths and support needs
  • Learning profiles to identify your most effective learning strategies

Our IQ testing Sydney services go beyond simple numerical scores. We provide detailed insights into how different cognitive systems work together. This understanding helps explain why certain tasks feel natural while others require more effort.

Your Cognitive Assessment Questions Answered

What does a cognitive assessment involve?

Before your cognitive assessment, you will attend an initial consultation. During this first session, your psychologist will assess your concerns, history, and goals. For children and teens, 2 initial consultation sessions are required; 1 parent session and 1 child or teen session. Based on the information gathered, your psychologist will tailor an assessment to suit your needs.

The assessment involves 2 stages, which may require 2-4 sessions. The first stage is cognitive testing, which may include clinical interviews, questionnaires, and/or psychometric tests. After the cognitive testing is completed, the second stage involves your psychologist writing a detailed report with your results and recommendations. They will take you through this report and discuss next steps during a feedback session.

The results of a cognitive assessment may be used to tailor treatment plans, offer educational recommendations, and guide therapy.

How many sessions are required for a cognitive assessment Sydney?

Excluding the initial consultation, a cognitive assessment typically comprises 2-4 sessions, depending on the cognitive testing required. After the cognitive assessment is complete, and if it is appropriate, you are welcome to continue to see your psychologist for further support and treatment.

How much does the initial consultation cost?

The initial consultation session is charged at your psychologist’s regular rate.

Subsequent sessions for ongoing support and treatment are also charged at your psychologist’s regular rate.

How much does a cognitive assessment cost?

The fee for an assessment varies, as all of our assessments are tailored to suit our clients’ individual needs. The fee is dependent on a variety of factors, such as the number of sessions required, the hours required, and the types of tests used.

The cost of an assessment can be as low as $1400. Please contact the clinic for an estimated fee for a standard assessment.

An accurate quote will be provided after your initial consultation. 50% of the assessment fee is due before the testing stage, and the remaining 50% is due before the report writing and feedback stage.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate for a cognitive assessment?

Unfortunately, Medicare does not offer rebates for cognitive assessments.

However, you may be able to claim a Medicare rebate for your initial consultation session, as well as any additional sessions that occur after the assessment. To claim the Medicare rebate, we require a valid referral and Mental Health Care Plan from a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist.

If I have already completed some cognitive testing, will these tests need to be repeated?

Previous cognitive testing may need to repeated depending on how recently the cognitive tests were completed, the testing procedure and protocol, and your current concerns. This will be discussed with your psychologist during your initial appointment.

How do I know whether I need a cognitive assessment?

During your initial consultation, your psychologist can help to evaluate whether a cognitive assessment is appropriate by taking into account your concerns, history, and goals.

How do I book a cognitive assessment?

For more information or to book a psychometric assessment, please contact reception on 02 9066 3070.

What do I need to bring to my initial consultation?

Please bring your or your loved one’s past medical, developmental, and academic reports, notes, or comments. These documents may be provided by teachers, paediatricians, doctors etc.

Ideally, we prefer to receive these documents prior to your appointment.

What do I do after my cognitive assessment?

Your psychologist will provide a detailed report with your results and personalised recommendations for ongoing management or treatment. These outcomes will be discussed during your feedback session, during which your psychologist can help formulate a plan on how to move forward.

If further psychological support or treatment is recommended, you are welcome to continue seeing your psychologist. We can also provide referrals for external care if necessary.

For a child assessment, who attends a feedback session?

Parents are required to attend feedback sessions. While it may not be appropriate for young children to attend, older children and teenagers may wish to be involved in the feedback session.

What is the youngest age at which a child can have a cognitive assessment?

The age-appropriateness of cognitive assessments for young children varies from child to child. We have conducted assessments for children as young as 4 years old.

Please note that for children who are younger than school-age, cognitive assessment results can be highly variable if repeated. This tends to stabilise once children enter school, at which stage assessment results become better predictors of future academic achievement.
