Sports & Performance Psychology in Sydney

At McKinnon Psychology, we understand that performance is more than physical skill — it’s a reflection of mindset, focus, and emotional balance. Whether you’re an elite athlete, developing competitor, or transitioning beyond sport, psychological support can help strengthen the mental foundations that enhance performance and wellbeing. Our clinic, based in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, offers evidence-based support for individuals striving to reach their potential in high-pressure environments. We assist athletes and performers to manage performance anxiety, build confidence, and navigate the emotional and identity challenges that often come with high-performance environments.

How we Support Athletes

Every athlete’s journey is different. We work collaboratively to understand what matters most to you and to support performance and wellbeing both in and beyond sport. Common areas of focus include:

  • Performance confidence and anxiety: managing pre-competition nerves and fear of failure
  • Maintaining focus under pressure: performing with clarity in high-stakes situations
  • Resilience and motivation: navigating injury, off-seasons, setbacks, and training demands
  • Balancing life and sport: managing study, relationships, and identity beyond performance
  • Transition and adjustment: adapting to retirement or changing roles within sport

Our approach integrates clinical expertise with a genuine understanding of the sporting world — helping clients of all ages overcome barriers, recover from setbacks, and maintain balance both in and outside of competition.

Our Approach

Jordan takes a whole-person perspective that considers the psychological, social, and environmental factors influencing wellbeing and performance. Our clinicians draw on evidence-based frameworks, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Schema Therapy
  • Mindfulness-and visualisation-based approaches
  • Attachment- and systems-focused interventions

This approach helps clients manage unhelpful thought patterns, build mental flexibility, strengthen emotional regulation, clarify values, and enhance self-awareness — key components of resilience and consistent performance.

We recognise that optimal performance emerges when these elements of wellbeing are in balance, and our work emphasises practical strategies that support not just performance, but the person behind it.

Common Questions About Sports & Performance Psychology

What’s the difference between a Sport and Exercise Psychologist and a Psychologist who works in performance?

Both can offer valuable support for athletes and performers.

A Sport and Exercise Psychologist holds a specific endorsement through AHPRA, reflecting additional postgraduate training focused on sport and exercise settings.

A Psychologist is trained at a more advanced level in mental health assessment and treatment and may also specialise in performance psychology and psychology for athletes – helping clients strengthen both wellbeing and performance under pressure.

Our Edgecliff clinic is conveniently located for athletes across the Eastern Suburbs, including Bondi, Double Bay, and Paddington. We’re easily accessible by public transport and offer parking nearby. We welcome athletes from all across Sydney.

How long does therapy typically take?

Every athlete’s journey is unique. Some benefit from short-term support over 6-8 sessions, whilst others prefer ongoing guidance. We’ll discuss your goals and create a treatment plan that works for your needs and schedule.
