Kahala Dixon

I am a Registered Clinical Psychologist, having completed a Master of Clinical Psychology at Macquarie University. I am also a member of the Australian Psychological Society.

In the Beginning

I have always been passionate about working in healthcare, particularly mental health.

I started my career in cardiac nursing and quickly noticed a marked overlap between physical and emotional health, as well as how often mental health was overlooked when physical health was involved. I felt passionate about improving the mental health of those presenting with physical health issues, which lead me to want to learn more about psychology.

Since this time, I have developed a keen interest in adjusting to health challenges and perinatal psychology. I am also very passionate about working holistically with clients to overcome trauma, anxiety, depression and other related challenges.

Extensive Experience Across Hospital and Private Settings

I have experience working across both public and private sectors with clients presenting with various challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma-related difficulties, and emotional dysregulation across adolescence to adulthood.

Alongside working at McKinnon Psychology, I currently work at the Parent and Babies Unit (Naamuru) at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in both a clinical and research role. Prior to this, I worked with families adjusting to the perinatal period with moderate to severe mental health challenges at the Perinatal Mental Health Service (PIMHS), Sydney Local Health District, as well as Nepean Antenatal Clinic, Anxiety Disorders Clinic and Nepean Family Metabolic Health Clinic.

My Approach

I am a gentle and warm psychologist; I like to spend time building relationships with clients to ensure that they feel most comfortable speaking about their challenges with someone new.

I prefer to take an individualised stance to my support for clients, understanding that there is not a “one size fits all” approach, utilising evidence-based treatment approaches.

In My Spare Time

I enjoy being outside in nature, particularly spending time in the sunshine. Being active where possible helps me to unwind as well as engage in my own mindfulness practices to remain in the present moment.
